Semester 3

Measured Drawings

[ARC 60305]

We were to learn to properly document an as built building, Sin Sze Si Ya of Kuala Lumpur in this module. The purpose was to expose students to real life architecture work. Many exercises were given to us as part of our training in the real world.

Project 1:
Sketchbook and Journal

First of all, whilst completing this individual project, we were also present at the temple to collect data and measurements for the next part of the module. We were separated into groups to collect measurements for us to use for our CAD work, modelling work, etc.

This project was meant to be an on-site drawing exercise to see how good we are at documenting the physical and intangible qualities of the building.

It was compulsory for us to sketch the plan, section and elevation of the building and also at least 2 of these categories:

1. The Genius Loci

2. The Poetic Quality

3. Cultural Attributes

4. Technical/Construction Details.

From this project, I have learnt more ways to sketch and paint from the help of my fellow teammate. It took me about 2 days to gather all 10 sketches. I have tried to fit in all the requirements so feel free to browse through my sketches.

Project 2:
Video and Report

Everyone in the group was to come together to make a short video and extensive report about the building.

The main editors of our video was Amir and Adrian.

For the report, everyone chipped in on their own parts to create a report that we hope can give more information than what you can find in books or on the internet. We did work very hard on the analysis of the building since we did not want our report to look just like any other documentary.

Me and my teammate, Mark, even went to the extent to interview an architect who builds temples, Mr Kevin Mark Low, to get some insight and advice from him. Other than that, we also interviewed the workers in the temple, Miss Ransit, Mrs Tey and a Mr. Lim.

This part of the project led me to go into detective mode and learn to carefully analyse the floorplans, sections and history of the building and learn a lot about what has been through analytical skills.

Project 3:
Measured Drawings and Model

This part of the module was the hardest one yet. As I was involved in report writing, model making, and Autocad drawing, I found it really hard to balance my time between this three. As soon as i finished my part on the report, I moved on to the model. After the first few days of modelling, I had to focus on the Autocad drawings as that had a higher percentage weightage. However, I tried to help out with the other parts as much as I could. Luckily, we had a team to carry out each part.

The objective of this project was to produce a set of measured drawings of the building which complements the report as well as a physical model to show the gist of the building. This project hopes to ensure students know ho to interpret historical architectural element, structure and building, translate measured data into scaled drawings, explain the as built building construction, and so on.
