Building Materials
[ARC 1513]
This subject basically teaches about the survey of visual, chemical and physical properties of building materials and their application, while encompassing energy saving and recycled materials.
Project 1:
Space Out: The Material Cube
In this project we were given the opportunity to build our own cubes from scratch using two different materials respectively:
1. Wood
2. Paper
We were to make them in a 30x30 cm dimension.
Although it may sound easy we had to overcome various obstacles to finally get to the perfect end product.
Materials and bonding used had to be taken into account, and the angle of each side, to achieve the perfect right angle.
This was a very challenging project but I am glad that we had a chance to docarry out this project as I have learnt a lot from it.
Now, I appreciate the materials around me and the I can see the beauty in a simple design. I also appreciate the materials around me a little more.
Project 2:
Materiality of SPACE
This proposal is to apply the understanding of different types of building material that affects the design, building or space in terms of physical and chemical properties. It also improves the classification and experimentation of different types of building materials and technology in order to boost the understanding of building materials in relation to residence, structural and spatial quality of a space, building and environment.
We also get to understand the appropriateness of material used in relation to occupancy, concept and weather change, and the importance of selection of building materials for a space and building. The appropriateness of selecting building materials including the finishes and structural was identied according to their physical and chemical properties.
In this project we were to create 2 A2 boards in a group after our site visit and also an individual A2 board each to further explain the gist of each material used in our chosen space.
The space that we have chosen was award winning concept cafe Acme Bar and Coffee, located at the ground floor of award winning high end condominium The Troika, in Kuala Lumpur.
From this exercise, I am now more able to explore, classify and describe various types of materials and their physical and chemical properties.
