Semester 4
Design Studio IV
[ARC 60206]
The objectives of this semester is
1. To develop awareness of environmental sustainability in architectural design
2. To develop the student’s ability to meet the imperative and inter-related environmental and social needs, as well as make poetry with the buildings
3. To emphasize on space planning of clusters of buildings
Project 1:
Furniture for an Elderly
In Project 1, in a group of 2 group members, we were to visit an elderly home to identify and analyze the daily life of an elderly in order to build a furniture with requirements that are specific to him.
The name of the gentleman that stars in our project is Mr. Singh, a doctor who was born in Punjab.
Analysis boards were to be produced to introduce Mr. Singh to our project. This was done effectively and efficiently with my groupmate, Saurabha.
At the end of this project I have learnt to identify and analyze environmental qualities and contextual needs of a site, apply ideas of environmental sustainability and design and create architectural spaces with consideration of environmental poetics in relation to the basic natural context and existing built context which impact on users’ experiences

This project was a great kickstart to my final project.
Project 2:
Center for an elderly
We were given a piece of land in PJS 7 to build an elderly home upon in thsi semester. The project calls for a design of an elderly center in a suburban area(PJS 7) with some complexity that includes the complexity of site topography and vegetation and socio-cultural events. We were required to provide full design proposal incorporating precedent study and site analysis at appropriate level of presentation. It explores design solution that harness environmental qualities and conditions for human and environment sustainability. We also have to explore design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilizing clustered spatial typology and passive energy. The design should contribute to and merge harmoniously with nature and the site, and provide the best of experiences for the users.
Project 2(a): Site Analysis

In our respective tutorial groups, we were to present our group's site analysis in the form of a Site Analysis board, and the 1:200 scale model of the microsite.

This was done effectivey due to great temwork and systematic planning.

From this project I have learnt that good teamwork plays a huge role in the smooth sailing of a project, and also learnt skills such as site model making and site analysis graphics which will help me in the higher semesters.
Concept: Between the Edges
Concept: Between the Edges
Project 2: Center for an elderly
The objectives of this project was to develop awareness of environmental sustainability in architectural design and also the student’s ability to meet the imperative and inter-related environmental and social needs, as well as make poetry with the buildings. It was also to emphasize on space planning of clusters of buildings.

It must be understood that ordinary design riteria may not apply to an elderly home, hence a lot of research and deep though must be put into the design of this building to ensure the safety and comfort of its occupants.

The concept of my building was Between the Edges which means
1. The edges of society
2. The edges of religious and cultural boundaries
3. The edges of the dwelling

At the end of this project, I was able to
1. Apply ideas of environmental sustainability in design
2. Design and create architectural spaces with consideration of environmental poetics in relation to the basic natural context and existing built context which impact on users’ experiences.
3. Combine the environmental needs, the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), and the users’ experiences within simple building design in the open landscape/suburban context.
4. Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas based on clustered spatial typology
