Project 2:
Integration Project

This project aims to integrate students' understanding of the principles of lighting design in the context of the Architectural Design Studio 5 design. It will encompass artificial and daylighting systems and also the implementation of the PSALI design strategies.

The objectives of this project are as follows:
1. To be able to show understanding of artificial lighting and daylighting strategies (PSALI) in their final design.
2. To be able to solve design problems in relation to sustainability issues (natural lighting, site analysis).
3. To be able to design spaces incorporating artificial and daylighting (when necessary).

These are the learning outcomes:
1. I was able to analyse and document construction methods and materials
2. Evaluate existing construction system and detailing of the selected project.
3. Critique issues pertaining to construction principles, materials, techniques, codes of practice, process of assembly, and detailing.
4. Generate alternative construction solutions by means of sketches and drawings.

Below are the calculations done based on the design and the accompanying A2 boards.
Project 1:
Lighting & Acoustic Performance Evaluation and Design

Lighting Design is a primary element in architecture design and interior architecture. Solid volumes, enclosed spaces, colors and texture can only be appreciated fully when they are imaginatively lit. Successful buildings are those in which the lighting of the building itself and the lighting of the activities it contains together make up a unified design concept. This project is design to expose and introduce students to daylighting and lighting requirement in a suggested space. On the other hand, Acoustic Design is an element which concerned with control of sound in spaces especially enclosed spaces. The requirement varies in relation to functional spaces whether it is a cinema, lecture theatre, restaurant and café or acoustical requirements for a meeting room. It is essential to preserve and enhance the desired sound and to eliminate noise and undesired sound. Prestigious buildings are those in which the acoustic of the building itself speak of the quality of the building itself. This project is design to expose and introduce students to acoustic design and acoustical requirements in a suggested space.

Objectives of Assignment
1. To understand the lighting and acoustic characteristics & requirement in a suggested space.
2. To critically report and analyse the space.

In a group of 6 members, we chose to use the L45 community library as our case study as it responds to our theme for Design Studio this semester. It was also interesting to use this library as our case study given the fact that it is a combination of a public library and a private student housing hostel.

Some of the analysis done on site included:

Lighting:
1. The site conditions (sky condition, building orientation, etc.).
2. Readings of daylight level, lighting level and photos (digital images) in the chosen case study at different times of day (peak and non-peak time). 3. Quantitative analysis is required in order to present your findings in conclusions.
4. Daylighting and lighting condition (identify the problems).
5. Presenting a lighting contour diagram.
6. Presenting all findings graphically as much as possible.
7.Providing the calculation for the existing building.
Acoustic:
1. The general site conditions (e.g. highway, main roads adjacent to your case study).
2. Readings of sound level indoor and outdoor and photos (digital images) in the chosen case study at different times of day (peak and non-peak time).
3. Quantitative analysis is required in order to present your findings in conclusions.
4. Indoor and outdoor noise (identify the problems)
5. Presenting noise contour diagram.
6. Presenting all our findings graphically as much as possible
7. Provide the calculation for the existing building.

Finally, the learning outcome for this project is such as:
1. Being able to produce a complete documentation on analysis of space in relation to lighting requirement eg. Natural and artificial lighting. (Pictures, sketches and drawing) and analysis of factors which effects the lighting design of a space.
2. Exploring and applying understanding of building physic eg. Lighting towards building / construction technology and building materials on existing building projects.
3. Basic understanding and analysis of lighting layout and arrangements by using certain methods or calculations eg. Lumen method and PSALI.
4. Basic understanding and analysis of acoustic design layout and arrangements by using certain methods or calculations eg. Reverberation time and sound transmission coefficient.
